There is a captivating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino betting is against the law. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; however, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is correct of many borders.

The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that highlights numerous comforts aside from the casino, which has 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 tables.
